The New Jersey Children's Museum is great for toddlers and preschoolers. Lots of interactive, hands-on exhibits, including a real fire truck, a real helicopter, cool fossil/dinosaur cave, play ballet studio, kids' medieval castle, and much, much more.
The New Jersey Children's Museum is more of a play area than a museum. It is kind of like a warehouse space divided up into rooms using dividers. The rooms are full of toys with different themes: grocery store, post office, wild west, ballet, playing house, music, etc. The toys are old and dated, but I find the free play nice for the kids, not a lot of computer interactive gizmos, just imaginative play. Most of the kids who enjoy it are preschool age, I would say 18 months to 6 years old. There are group activities at different intervals, like puppet shows. If you go with two parents and a couple of kids, it can get expensive at $10 a person 1yr and up. There are coupons in emails and entertainment books, so get some first.
This museum has so much to do. If your kids are under 10, you will definitely want to bring them here. Just pull up a chair and find something to do, because they will be entertained running around from one section to the other. There are lots of pretend play areas, including a castle section, native American area, water play area, etc. It can get pretty crowded on the weekends, so I recommend going on a weekday evening. Still, it's worth it. Your kids will be very happy.
My experience at the New Jersey Children's Museum was not too special at all. The outside of the museum really is not very attractive. My children were fixated on going to this museum because they saw the commercial. They left disappointed because it was not as fun for them as the commercial made it out to be. Also we had a stroller fiasco because the worker said that they had a place to put strollers but they ended up giving mine away to the wrong person. I wouldn't trust this place or else you may end up stroller-less with let down children as well.
This place seems to be a big thing for school trips. It was very crowded with children running everywhere. As you drive up, it looks like a hole in the wall, but inside is certainly larger than it looks. It just seems that they squished so much inside that it gets to be too over whelming. Was too stressful for me to try to take them alone again. If you have one child it would be a much better place.
This museum is not much to look at on the outside, it looks like a warehouse but it's full of different activities inside. Lots of diverse activites inside and some rooms are designed to a theme of the month. You can decorate small pumpkins on halloween and eggs in Easter.
