As the name suggests, this state park is centered around an enormous natural tunnel. The tunnel's formation began more than a million years ago in the early glacial period, when groundwater containing carbonic acid crept through crevices, gradually dissolving the surrounding bedrock of limestone. Then, geologists believe, what's now Stock Creek was diverted underground to continue the carving process over many centuries. In 1890 the South Atlantic and Ohio Railroad arrived and laid tracks through the tunnel. The railroad still passes through today. Later acquired by the Commonwealth of Virginia, the tunnel, which is about 850 feet long and 100 feet in diameter, along with 850 acres now make up the focal point of this popular park.
Take a chair lift (located right next to the visitor center) to see the sights or opt for one of the many hiking trails. Within a mile or two of the visitor center, there are picnic facilities (shelters can be reserved in advance), an Olympic-size swimming pool, a large bathhouse, and a concecssion building. Seven walking trails - the longest is only 1.1 miles - allow for short strolls. The most popular trail follows the rim of the cliff from the visitor center to Lover's Leap, 0.3 miles away.
Interpretive programs, generally held at the campground on summer weekends, emphasize local culture, with presentations on basket-weaving, blacksmithing, and environmental science. Evening campfire talks feature local folklore and, sometimes, night hikes. The Cove Rdige Center has eight dormitory rooms, an auditorium, and a library with computers designed to accomodate groups and classes. Ask about the park's cave tours and geology workshops.
