The museum is open until 8 pm on Thursdays.
This museum is a very small museum with very interesting information on American Indian history. I remember visiting with my freshman class in high school and listening to a nice discussion on the indigenous American Indians that dwelled in Manahattan when it was discovered. Definitely more for school age children 10 or older. They have great gifts in the gift shop but worth a little time exploring this museum.
The museum is very close to the dock where you take the ferry to Ellis Island. So it is a good idea to go visit it after you are back from the Island. The building is beautiful and the exhibits are very interesting with contemporary art that are rarely seen elsewhere. One of the art pieces was a mix of items that are destroying the Native American youth and the goal was to guess the whole purpose of the art piece and why the items were picked. There are also areas more suitable for younger children. Overall, a fantastic experience for the whole family.
More than a million artifacts spanning 10,000 years of Native American culture and history are housed inside this beautiful Beaux Arts building, but only a small portion are on display. Family programs feature Native dance, music, theater, storytelling, and multimedia presentations.
