If you have boys (I have 2), then you need to get to this museum if you are ever in the area! It is free to get in, as are the Smithsonians, but it does cost to park your car. It is a bit of a drive, maybe 40 minutes, from DC. You will want to plan lots of time for this adventure. There are multiple stories to be able to see all of the planes that they house. There are planes from all eras, and even some very famous. It is very wheelchair accessible and stroller accessible, in case you are toting baby or exploring with the grandparents. There is a McDonalds inside, in case you get hungry. I would suggest checking the website to see what special things might be happening. Every year, they have a very special event that brings in planes and pilots of all shapes and sizes from all over to showcase their unique planes. We were able to walk inside an Air Force cargo plane as well as many other military and civilian planes and helicopters. It also has the Space Shuttle Enterprise!! In short, wear your most comfortable walking shoes and prepare to be amazed.
But pricey for parking. Its b/c its on the Dulles Airport property. AND there is a fee to drop off. FYI! Great Imax Theatre and view of Dulles from a control tower. Extras like the 3D shows and rides are expensive. Tiny food court. So bring your own food.
This is a great museum. The kids love seeing all of the planes and the space shuttle is there! There is so much to see and read about. In the fall around Halloween you can get tickets for trick or treat there. This is a safe and fun alternative for the kids. We love this place.
Located near Dulles airport, in many ways Udvar-Hazy is better than its well known brother downtown. If you are staying outside the city, especially in Virginia, it's easy to get to and admission is by the car not by the person. And the crowds are far less than going downtown. Inside, it's two floors of a giant hangar full of airplanes, the space shuttle, helicopters, rockets, and lots of other flying related stuff. Get up close to the space shuttle and the concorde. Udvar-Hazy is also great for families who have toddlers because it's a wide open space that is suitable to running around. For toddlers, the giant space will be an adventure, while it's educational for older kids. The only knock is the eating, which is limited to an on-site McDonald's. We have been here many times and the kids still enjoy it.
We have been there several times. A few times per year they have special events, with extra activities for kids (planes outside they can sit in, people to talk to about different topics (pilots, Airmen, etc) and even scavenger hunts!) Although you must pay to park if you go early ($15/carload) we go after 3pm, when parking is free.
The Udvar-Hazy air and space museum is a giant airplane hanger with many types of aircraft inside. It includes a space shuttle, the Enola Gay, military jets and smaller aircraft. The IMAX theatre is a favorite with my family, and the simulator rides are very fun!
The Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum built this facility to restore and display its collection of aviation and space artifacts. The center includes exhibit hangars (with more than 200 aircraft and 135 spacecraft), an observation tower to watch planes taking off and landing at Dulles, an IMAX theater, restaurants, and gift shops.
