Muir Beach about 6 miles north of San Francisco is located in a town of the same name - Muir Beach.  High bluffs boarded the sandy beach in the north and south.  Picnic areas offer tables, grills, pit toilets, and water. Fires are allowed only in designated fire rings.  Dogs must be on leashes.  There are strong currents, so swimming is not advisable.  Views of large boulders in the ocean make for a dramatic beach landscape.  In the northern end of Muir Beach, you'll find some tide pools teeming with star fish.  But use caution when climbing these rocks with kids.

"One great Beach"

Our family has visited over 10 beaches and this has to be one of the top picks.  The environment is great and the food is fantastic.  The beach atmosphere is so calm and inviting compared to other beaches.  This is definately a must during the summer months.

"Hidden Gem"

We found Muir Beach a few years ago as a stop off while we drove up the coast.  It has become a favorite for our family that we visit several times every year to escape the valley heat.  Muir beach offers swimming, tide pooling, hiking and relaxing.  It is a beautiful location with cliffs on the North and South faces and a nice stream and lagoon behind the beach.  It is a nice quiet beach with a few pros and cons.  It is a bit of a walk from the parking lot to the water through very deep sand and can be a bit tough if you are carrying a lot of stuff.  This keeps some folks away which we like.  It does get pretty full on the weekends though but never too crowded.  The parking can be a pain on a high traffic weekend.  The facilities are minimal with a few BBQ pits and  porta-potties  but this is a NorCal beach after all.  The sand is a little gritty but still feels good between the toes.  Weather can be a bit unpredictable here.  I have seen many perfect days as well as a few windy and foggy ones.  We use Stinson beach as a Plan B for those days.  I have seen Muir be windy, cold and socked in with fog on days when Stinson was perfect.  The tidepools are great especially during a good lowtide.  My daughter (now 11) and I have spent many hours exploring.  Now she takes her friends through the pools.  It is a nice wide beach where you can find some peace, there are lots of kids to keep yours busy.  It is a dog friendly beach.  The waves are pretty mellow here and are great for wading, boggie boarding and body surfing.  I have seen a few campfires but I am not sure what the restrictions are.  I have BBQed on the beach and in the parking lot.  With the walk, I suggest the lot.  Hope you enjoy!

"little hidden cove"

This beach is somewhat secluded. If you didn't know what you were looking for you might miss it. This beach is my parents favorite. If your looking to get away from it all and want quiet and seclusion this is for you .Not many waves sinces its in a cove like area. the walk from the car to a good spot to set up is kind of long and the sand is deep and could be a little exhausting. there are only porta pottys that pretty much stink bad in summertime and some bees. I dont take my kids here because like I said its more quiet and secluded not too kid friendly
