You may think you can teach your kids how to ski but sometimes your kids are more receptive to someone besides their parents. This is the most convinient ski resort for travelers. The resort is only 30 minutes from Salt Lake City. The kids ski school is awesome! Leave your kids to be taught by the professionals while you enjoy the greatest snow on earth. The instructors are great with the kids and the professional photographer for the resort will take a picture of your child for you to purchase. You can get special rates at www.skiutah.com
After building sandcastles in sunny Florida, we were ready to leave the sandy shores and hit the snowy slopes. We had an amazing snow and ski experience! Since our little snow bunny had not seen snow nor been on skis, we enrolled our four year old daughter in the Signature 3 Program (ages 3 ½ - 5) where she received lots of personal attention due to their maximum of three students per child-specialist policy. Located in the heart of the Park City Mountain Resort, we easily found the entrance to the Kids Signature Programs at the Kids Mountain School thanks to the helpful ski volunteers (they wear orange ski jackets) on duty in the main plaza to help give directions to lifts, restaurants and the ski schools.
There are two program start times to choose from (9am or 9:45am). We were told that the 9:45 am session usually has fewer children enrolled which might be ideal for those wishing to sleep in just a bit longer. Reservations are a must especially during busy season (holidays and weekends). Children must be potty-trained to participate in any of the Signature Programs at Park City. Program fees include lift privileges, equipment (excluding helmets) and lunch. About fifteen minutes before our program start time, we completed the registration forms, met with the program staff, saw the lunch menu for the day, and kissed our little snow bunny goodbye for her six-hour adventure. Checking in and out of the program was a breeze as there are plenty of friendly staff members on hand to ensure a smooth transition. There are child size chairs in the registration / check in area which help kids feel like this place is just for them. The staff not only took great care of my daughter, but kept a close eye on her gloves, hat, boots, etc. and returned her with all of her belongings at the end of the day. The facilities are very secure, clean and child friendly. Parents are not allowed beyond the check in desk – it’s a “parent free zone” which made our daughter giggle and feel extra special. We did see one child having some trouble separating from her parents. To help ease the transition, one of the female program staffers sat down at her eye level and reassured her that they would have a great day together. After some time, she was eventually able to join the other kids in ski school.
During her six hour program, she had two “on the slopes” 75-minute ski lessons, a tasty lunch and playtime on the massive indoor jungle gym. The gym is on a padded floor with a variety of play stations. They had balls, a ride on car, a wagon and a spider web rope climb. It was a joy watching her run out of the ski school bursting with stories of snow, ski and friendships made while on the magic carpet.
The outdoor ski school begins on a roped in snowy, flat area where they learn the basics of skiing. Within this area, we saw our daughter learn to get on and off the magic carpet, hold her balance while the ski instructors pushed her down a gentle slope, go through a basic obstacle course with hula hoop archways (castles) and shuffle step on skis. Once students master the starting area, those kids graduate to the bunny slopes. They are led one by one with an instructor to a beginners lift and ride up to the top of the turtle trail. Those unable to master the starting area stay behind to work on their skills. The program ensures that each child skis at their own pace and abilities. It was wonderful for us to be able to spend all day skiing knowing that our daughter had an equal balance of indoor and outdoor activities.
Our four year old especially loved sliding on and off the magic carpet, making snow balls to hit Mr. Moose and creating snow angels with her classmates. We were able to sneak a peek and snap a few pics during her group ski lessons – what a treat! It made us proud to see her learning how to “make a pizza slice” gliding across the snow trails through hula hoop castles and riding across the magic carpet all by herself. She’s on her way to Olympic gold!
