Fantastic day!!!! We saw "Guys and Dolls" . The performers were fantastic, as well as the orchestra. My daughter is 7 years old and had a great time. We went up on the bus from the high school. The bus drivers are incredible manuvering about the bike riders. We arrived about 10:30am. They had a kids puppet show at 10:45am and again at 12n. He was wonder man from Children's Fairyland in Oakland. There was also a three piece band playing music. We did not attempt the walk down since they said it was 2-3 hours, but will bring other shoes next year and give it a drive. Breath-taking views at the top, as well as on the bus ride. Would recommend to families with kids. We felt very safe around the area too. Also, the food prices were very reasonable. ~Lisa
Our son is a bit, o.k. very, active. Sitting through a whole play is not doable. I should say I am not interested in making him sit anyway but love the idea of him seeing plays and these are GREAT. An alternative to seeing the whole thing for us has been to go to the dress rehearsals. The rehearsals happen every weekend leading up to the play but the dress rehearsal runs happen the weekend before. This year, they are doing, "The Man of La Mancha." So the Sat and Sunday before (16th and 17th of may of this year '09) we'll be there. There is all the fun of a picnic and joy of the play but you don't have to worry about your kid running around disturbing people or the crowds in general. Last year we watched about half an hour of the Wizard of Oz and then went on a hike/picnic up to O'Rourke's bench (about a mile straight up from the Rock Springs parking lot - overlooks the ocean - great place to eat and climb around a tree and sit on a neat bench). They have a great website too. http://www.mountainplay.org/
A wonderful opportunity to expose your kids to theater while enjoying the relaxed, scenic outdoors of Mt. Tam. This experience happens every year on Sundays the end of May through the middle of June. There is usually one Saturday performance. It's an all day adventure, so be prepared. We always take the free round-trip shuttle from Mill Valley up to the amphitheater. You can drive and pay for parking up top if you prefer. The tickets are getting more expensive each year, but we've made it our Mother's Day/Father's Day tradition and include the grandparents as well. My girls have been going since they were born, we've only missed one performance, Hair, which I didn't feel was appropriate for little kids. There is a puppet performance for the kids up in the shade before the show. The weather is unpredictable so wear layers and bring hats and sunscreen because there is little to no protection from the sun. The kids love bringing spray bottles to cool themselves and us down. There are some shady spots and they have added a shade screen overhead in one section, but most sections are in the sun. We always pack a lunch with lots of water which can be enjoyed before, during and after the play. You can purchase food and water up on the mountain. The amphitheater is usually packed out. There are port-a-potties. Afterwards, you can take the free shuttle back to your car, or hike down the mountain and let the buses take your stuff.
