Moonstone Beach is one of our favorite spots to take the family because not only do the kids love it but it so beautful that we love it too! My 3.5 year old enjoys taking a bucket to collect "treasures" and my son (7 months) simply enjoys the fresh air. When my daughter was just learning to walk, she loved the board walk because it provided an even surface to walk on. It can be breezy and cold so be sure to bring a jacket. There is so much to see in Cambria that this makes for a great spot to stop along the way (before enjoying the rest of the town).
This beach and coastline is absolutely beautiful!!! It is a great beach to take the kids to and it also has a great park not too far from it that you can drive to and park right next to. It is also super close to downtown Cambria so you can grab a yummy bite to eat and enjoy the wonderful shops!
Personally I think this is a better walk to go on without the kids because it is such a romantic stroll along the beach, but the kids do enjoy the wildlife and the beach as well. We usually find a place to get some tea to-go and a muffin and walk along the boardwalk for as long as our little one will let us go. There are public restrooms at the far north of the walk.
Moonstone beaches name says it all. The ground on the beach is a mix of sand, small pebbles, and worn glass of all colors. It is fun to take a bucket and see how many pieces of glass you can find and the colors that they are. It's also great for using later in math lessons (sorting, dividing, adding, subtracting) and since they collected them themselves, it makes it more interesting. :)
Moonstone Beach is the place to find smooth, milky-white stones and gnarled pieces of driftwood. Don’t think about swimming here, because the water is really too cold, but beachcombing is the best! You can often see migrating whales passing by in January and February and hear the cries of sea otters and sea lions year-round. There are several bed-and-breakfast inns, motels, and restaurants along Moonstone Beach Drive if you want to savor the crashing surf.
We spent the weekend here a few weeks ago, and had the best time. We stayed at the Sea Otter Inn right across the street. We would walk across the street daily to check out the seals at Moonstone Beach. We also had a blast combing the pebble sand for "moonstones"
My husband and I took a road trip with our four legged son Bentley the Boxer. We had a blast and loved staying in Cambria Shores Inn where Bentley was allowed to stay with us. We loved the Inn! Some highlights: wonderful dog loving people, had a basket breakfast hanging outside our door each morning, right across the street from Moonstone Beach (great sea glass and rock hunting), great dog walk along the cliffs, quiet, peaceful and a great place to visit. We went in June and it was a little foggy but still had a blast. Enjoyed the outdoor patio at Moonstone Beach Bar and Grill. It's a must if you have a dog!
We spent our 12th anniversary here while our kids stayed home with grandparents. It was a beautiful place and the new boardwalk is really nice. There are many nice restaurants in the area and nearby Cambria, but many of them are upscale--no fast food! It's not the warmest beach in the area, so not fun for wading. For a warmer beach, people go down to Avila or Pismo. There is whale watching from the cliffs and just a few miles north you can watch the elephant seals wallow on the beach. http://www.elephantseal.org/
THere are really good tidepools in the area and local schools go there for field trips
