My family loves visiting the Montshire museum. I appreciate that it appeals to various age groups. My older two children(ages 9 and 7) enjoy all the hands on exhibits and the fish tanks. My youngest (3 years old) loves all the outdoor space to run and play in water. We make a point of visiting on a warm day so the kids can fully enjoy the water/splash area outside. Bring a swim diaper as the little ones need one to play in their tiered water exhibit. We always bring either swim suits for the kids or a change of clothes. There are lots of trails outside if your kids aren't worn out by all the indoor and water areas. Definitely a must see if you are in Northern New England!
Great indoor space. It has typical kids museum stuff that makes children think and use their minds. There's a large changing exhibit space upstairs so check back often to see what's there. But the real bonus is the outdoor water learning space. Great on a hot day! Make sure to bring towels and a change of clothes. There is not a lot of shade so you will need your sunscreen.
Also note that there is no cafe, no vending machines. Bring plenty of food and drink. There are plenty of places to picnic.
If you want to make lunch/dinner into a mini-adventure head over to King Arthur Flour Company http://www.kingarthurflour.com/ourstore/ which is just 5 minutes away! They now have a small cafe and enlarged store (fun for Mom!)
i love the Museum of Science and the Natural History and the Smithsonian...but the Montshire holds its own for quality and variety of exhibits. We went in the summer for the first time and though its a 1.5 hour trip for us...we plan on doing it several times a year. The kids didn't want to leave. They ran from one to the next and then back again. The outdoor water features are wonderful. The design and architecture embrace the landscape and really create a wonderful place. The staff are lovely, the gift shop is comparable to the best of the big museums and all in all, it was more than I expected. I recommend it wholeheartedly!
The Montshire Museum has rotating exhibits in addition to extensive permanent exhibits. Learn about Astronomy, Air & Weather, Light, Math & Mechanics and Natural Science. For the warmer months, Montshire has an extensite trail system and special outdoor programs.
Bring a picnic lunch or pop over into Hanover for a tour & lunch around town.
