The museum is open weekends and holidays May through October. You may board the train at Nelson Crossing depot at the museum or the Wabash Depot in downtown Monticello. Layovers at either depot are encouraged. There are museum cars to walk through and many pieces of rolling stock to view at the museum site, as well as the gift shop.

Having a son who loves trains...this place is always a hit! You get to ride on a real old fashion train through Monticello. It really is a neat experience. Although we've never been...around Halloween they do a fun haunted train ride. In December the kids can ride the train with Santa. They also do events for Mothers Day and Fathers Day. Waiting for the train on their old fashion benches really makes you feel like you are back in time. There is a neat gift shop with all sorts of train toys and books.
Here you’ll see historic railroad cars and equipment on display, including both steam engines and electric railcars. You can take a 50-minute train ride through the countryside in one of the museum’s vintage coaches or cabooses. A uniformed conductor will punch your ticket and remain on hand to answer any questions you may have.
