This is a big park, but you won't know till you see the trail map. it is nice to hike here because when you reach the top, you can see san diego from the middle of the city. There's jogging trail also, and it is overlooking the Lake Murray. The lake closed on major holiday though :Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. But, you can drive near here to watch the fireworks. Shore fishing!! or from private boat is ok. We actually catch couple trouts, my husband and nephew were so excited. "Dinner on us tonight!!" There are catfish and crappie also and don't forget you have to show state license. However, no rental boats available. I'm pretty sad when our dog cannot roam free here, on a leash at all times, 50 feet away from the water, and none on boats. But i know it is for their own safety, and probably the safety of the fish. There is no camping allowed at Lake Murray because there is a designated camping ground in the park, come here in spring, not summer people!! spring is nice but then again there was never too cold in San Diego. Another thing is this place gives the opportunity to horse back ride without driving out to julian or the further area. It is just there in the middle of the city, not far from restaurant (hungry after a ride) and not far away from well...civilization. Avoid the park in hot summer days, San Diego as all California have wild fire, and when it start you cannot outrun them. So be very careful, also with rattlesnake, it is a desert region after all.
