"Chalk Festival"

This is such a beautiful mission which is why it is dubbed the "Queen of the Missions".  The rose garden across the grass, the fountains, and the beautiful shape of this mission coupled with a view of the oceans, hemmed in by the nearby mountains makes this camera worthy!

Our family has really enjoyed the i madonnari chalk festival in May.  The dark asphalt in front of the mission becomes covered with fantastic art works.  Our kids and we have enjoyed viewing all the amazing "paintings" in chalk.

The mission tour was not so great for our young boys (3,5)  We adults were a little bored too.  I'm thinking when they are older we will all enjoy it more.

"Check out Christmas display"

The grounds of this mission are very nicely maintained. There is a large lawn leading up to the front of the church. We went in December 2008. The nativity scene out front had live animals, which my little boy really loved. Not sure if this is done every year though.

"Fun but quirky"

The Mission at Santa Barbara has a quirky museum - many of the written descriptions were typed on a typewriter years ago.  But there are fun displays and it gives you a good idea of what life was like in this community.  The church at the end of the tour is beautiful as is the interior courtyard which you can walk around.  Some short steps up and down so might be some work in a stroller. My son was a few months old and was in a sling at the time.

"Fun with the Family"

You will definitely want to tour “the Queen of the Missions” and still the longest continuously operating parish among California’s renowned chain of twenty-one missions. Founded on December 4, 1786, the feast day of Saint Barbara, and finally completed in 1820, it is one of the best-preserved missions. A fascinating self-guided walking tour that includes artworks, fountains, a courtyard, and a cemetery is recommended.

"Stunning mission"

Absolutely beautiful mission!  On the grounds is a cemetery, which was very interesting to my kids.  We got the mission passport that contains activities for the kids to complete as they explore the mission.  The passport kept the kids interested and helped them learn about the history of Mission Santa Barbara and its people.  Well worth the trip!

"The Queen of the Missions"

A very nice mission,  worth visiting if you are in the area, or working on your 4th graders California history report!  The grounds of this mission are some of the nicest you will encounter. It is well maintained, has plenty of history, and is a great spot to visit while you are in Santa Barbara.
