This is place is like home to me! I met my husband here, was married here, and had my daughtter baptized at the parish. This is such a scenic area and full of history. The museum is great, full of interesting facts. The gradens are great and well manicured. If you travel past the parking lot down into the gully you will find the old washing hole used by the Native Americans. It is a great place to learn history and take in beauty.
A little know fact, the old Zorro film was shot here. If you go the main enterace of the grave yard you will notice a skull and cross bone on the gate, this was not original to the mission. It was added for the movie :)
This “king of the missions” is number eighteen in the famous chain of twenty-one California churches begun by Father Serra. It’s also the largest and has wooden double dome construction. Picnicking facilities are available on the attractive grounds.
This is a big beautiful mission with a rich history. Little guys get in for free which helps out on the budget. The museum has very interesting artifacts that give kids an understanding of Mission Life. The Mission Church is colorfully painted and very beautiful.
My kids particularly enjoyed exploring the Lavandaria where clothes were washed with a series of elaborate ditches.
There are picnic tables available. There is a real cemetary which is still in use, make sure your little ones are ready to be respectful before exploring.
