We've been to about 6 of the missions, and this is probably the prettiest. Only surpassed by La Purisima in Oxnard, this Mission is the burrial place of Junipero Serra. The courtyard was very beautiful with a gorgeous garden. One turnoff was that since this is a very popular church for weddings, there's always something going on. The kids liked the mission and we took a ton of pictures.
The second mission founded by Father Junipero Serra, a glorious Spanish-Moorishcathedral surrounded by lovely gardens. Inside, the church is sienna, burnt umber, and gold, with soaring ceilings and star-shaped stained-glass windows. On a warm summer’s day, walk beneath shady colonnades and sit beside a trickling fountain.
A warren of thick-walled rooms, restored from original mission buildings, holds a magnificent museum collection of Native American, religious, and early California artifacts. In September, the Carmel Mission Fiesta is a family affair.
On Rio Road across from the Mission (or at Mountain View and Crespi or EleventhStreet and Junipero), you can access Mission Trail Park, thirty-five acres of cypress and pine forest and native vegetation, with 5 miles of easy walking trails.
