Once the site of two grand Catskill hotels, the preserve’s 11,630 acres, cradled by theShawangunks, include two crystal-clear lakes framed by white conglomerate cliffs and many miles of wide carriage paths that lead to numerous scenic overlooks. Swimming is permitted near the sandy beach at Lake Minnewaska, but if you’re wiling and able to hike a few miles farther into the woods, you’ll find Lake Awosting a bit more primeval and private.

"Take a Hike!"

Nothing beats the views from the Shawangunk (the Gunks) mountain range. The hikes are stupendous. You can do whatever you wish, from a stroll through the woods to rock climbing.  Bring the kids and a lunch and sit by the lake and swim. There is much to see here, don't pass this up!

"Great for fall foliage"

We love hiking in this park. If you have little ones, it's a little bit of a hike. You might need a jogging stroller and stay on the lower trails. Amazing water fall! In the summer, there's swimming in designated areas. Lake Minnewaska. Beautiful drive. Gets really crowded during peak foliage weekend.
