We did not miss the MN State Fair at all while we were living in Minnesota. It was so much fun! We never even did the rides, we just enjoyed the exhibits, the foods (just about anything on a stick), and the excitement of being at the fair. Our kids LOVED the little farm hands area, where they have a chance to pretend they are farmers and then spend their earnings at the end. One thing that we thought was especially cool about the MN state fair is that it is located right in the heart of St. Paul, a great bit city, but still has the feel of being in the country. Make sure you visit the baby animal bldg - there are constantly babies being born, and it's so fun to pet and watch all of the different farm babies! Don't miss it if you're in town during the MN State Fair!!
The MN State Fair is the second largest in the US and is definitely a full-day activity. If you can, go early in the day and plan to get breakfast while there--beat the heat and the crowds. If you have younger kids, definitely bring a stroller or wagon, as you can cover a lot of ground on the fairgrounds. There are TONS of activities for families, but I can tell you that many of the big draws for kids are the large farm equipment displays that they can climb on, the 4-H barns, and petting zoo area. They serve pretty much everything on a stick you could ever think of, so be daring!
That is what the great Minnesota get together is all about. Any kind of food presented on a stick, and usually deep fried. Bring your iron stomache for this one! Lots of fun activities for the family. Rides, animals, shopping, celebrity spotting. We especially loved the kids farm exhibit for the first time where the little ones could go through and learn about farming from planting the seeds to taking their crops to market. So adorable. Ignore the crowds and enjoy your experience. Oh, and don't forget to take a ride down the giant slide!
The last days of summer! The 10 days leading up to Labor day is when the fair is held. It is very popular and has a lot of fun for all ages. My kids love that there is a regular carnival area for big kids and a toddler type carnival (location in a different part) for little ones. You can't go to the fair without making sure you've got an emty stomach. There is so much good food (on a stick of course!). If you can, it's a must visit. Admission is usually under 10$
It was a lot of fun to go to the Minnesota state fair. I enjoyed it a lot more than the Iowa State Fair, in that it didn't seem quiet as large/crowded. It is still a little tricky to navigate with a stroller, especially in the buildings. But totally worth the stroller frustration, because I sure wouldn't want to try taking my kiddos in there without one. Also, they had great food and lots of activities. It was fun to see the parade during the afternoon.
The "Great Minnesota Get-together is a must! The variety of activities, booths, animals and shows is amazing! We saw Alpaca's, the Beauty Queen carves in butter, rode tractors, saw turtle races, and much more! The fair is large, so it is a very long day, but worth it! There are plenty of free and educational opportunities as well! We spent a lot of time in the Education Building talking to college recruiters.
This fair has all the traditional offerings. Lots of great food and whats not to like about a deep fried twinkie;-)
Hints-
Designate a meeting spot for older kids in case you get lost.
If you ever considered using one of the kid harnasses I would consider using one for a small walker here, it is crowded.
Write down your parking spot info.
Wear comfortable shoes.
At the Minnesota State Fair, kids can pet animals and see the miracle of birth, watch a young woman being carved in butter, sign up for free stuff, eat new and different foods, ride on the kidway, pretend they're a "little farm hand," and more. The only downside of the fair is that it sometimes has big crowds. Last year I braved the fair alone with four kids ages 3-7, and we had fun! Now I believe I can do anything.
