We LOVE the MN Children's Museum. While living in Minnesota during law school, we bought an annual membership and visited regularly. There's a great water area with fun water tables, bubble tables, etc. There's a fabulous dress up and pretend city where kids can sing and dance on stage, run a restaurant, dress up as a police officer, firefighter, etc, be a vet, the list goes on and on. We have been to quite a few childrens museums, and this one is our favorite so far!! We took each set of grandparents to visit too, and they were very impressed with what a great place it was. The kids and the adults have a great time!!
I was as amazed at this museum and my kids were too. Even when you walk into the building the entrance is beautiful. This museum has more areas for kids to interact with toys, machines and science then any other childrens museum I have been to. The exhibits are unique and they are all seperated into different areas based on catagory. The different areas where they can actually get there hands on time to learn were the best designed equipment I have ever seen in a childrens museum. I would say this is a MUST SEE in St. Paul.
Having visited several children's museums in cities all over the US, I can say that the MN Children's museum is one of the best! Though parking can be somewhat tricky here (use the ramp across the street, if it's not full) and it has its busy hours, if you can get here during a slower time, you won't be let down. There is an extensive baby/toddler room, several exploratory rooms for all ages and a very popular grocery store/house/bus activity room. The museum's hands-on equipment is kept clean and it's easy to get around in. Highly recommended!
We love the children's Museum. On cold winter days don't you just want to let the kids out somewhere? So many different activities. The kids never get bored, the hardest part is deciding where to start! It is helpful if you can avoid the school groups especially if you have toddlers. Call ahead!
My advice for here; if you don't like crowds then stay away on the first Sunday of the month (these are the free days). It's nuts in there! I prefer to go on weekdays for that reason. There really is a lot to do for all ages and well worth the price if you go on a day that's not so busy. Otherwise it gets hard for the kids to try everything.
The thing that makes this children's museum so expensive is that they charge for ages 1 and up. Which means if you have 3 kids under the age of 3...you still are paying for all of them when normally most attractions let kids under 3 in free. But it is totally worth it. They have an area that is set up like a city, where there is a restaurant to cook in, a bus to drive, a post office to work in, even a dog house! You could spend hours engaging in imaginative play. They also have an area with balls, water, and clear plastic tubes...quite possibly a toddler's dream! They have an area set up like a factory, with cranes and assembly lines to put foam blocks on. Each area helps kids explore part of our world hands on all at their level. If they allowed outside food in, we would have stayed all day!
This is a huge and wonderful children's museum. 3rd Sunday of the month is free. But those days are soooo busy. There is a long wait for the bathrooms and unattended kids everywhere. During the week it isn't so bad and you can call and ask if schools are coming on certain days. The exhibits are very well done.
Admission is $8.95 which may be high for some larger families. Every 3rd Sunday of the month is free, but be prepared to deal with large crowds on those days. Exhibits change every so often, so visit their website to see what events are happening when you visit. Lots of hands on activities for your Child!
My boys ages 6 and 10 love this place! Their favorite galleries are Earth World and World Works. They love scampering about in the maze of tunnels in the ant hill. They also love loading the boxes in the warehouse. It's so amazing to watch a group of kids spontaneously form a team to move the boxes up and down the 2 story warehouse. I enjoy playing with them in Our World gallery where they serve me food at the counter in the Asian restaurant. Afternoon times are a great time to go when there are less people. I can even bring a book to sit on one of the many parent benches while they play away. We check out the Passport to Play from the St. Paul Libraries which makes it FREE!
Not our favorite children's museum, but definately a good place to keep children from age infant to tween entertained. There is a nature area, infant and toddler area, art area on the roof and traveling exhibits. In summer of 2009 there is a Clifford exhibit.
The Minnesota Children's Museum is a large children's museum in St. Paul. They have several permanent galleries and two others that host traveling exhibits. No matter how many times we go, our kids always gravitate to the block factory area--it's always their favorite. This place can get busy, especially on the special free Sundays, so we try to choose our times carefully to avoid the crowds so the kids can enjoy it more.
