The Metreon is a nice stop if you're in the area.  It's located near some other kid-friendly venues like the carousel and Yerba Buena Gardens.  On a rainy day in the city, it's a great place to catch a film, too.

"Its just movies"

There are video games and stuff but really not the place I would want to spend a vacation or even an afternoon.  I also dont think my child would sit through a movie if she knew what money was and we paid her so that is that.  Cross the street to yerba buena or the SFMOMA

"Movies at the Metreon"

When our ship pulled into San Francisco we went here to watch movies at a discount.  We also toured the Titanic exhibit.  I didn't find this an extremely exciting place.  And it's not a place I would take young kids.  This is a more of a place to walk around and kill time.  There are more exciting places to go in San Francisco.

"An okay movie theatre"

We haven't been to the Metreon for a while.  We were just there today watching Avatar IMAX 3D and we notice some of the stores are closed down.  I guess that's how it is with businesses, old ones close and new ones appear.  There is a video arcade there.  The seats are a bit worn out although I appreciated the spacious leg room.  I was disappointed the seats don't recline a bit like the ones at the AMC on Van Ness.  However, the big screen gave me an awesome 3D experience with Avatar.  Tickets are more expensive for IMAX of course ($17 for adults, but $12 for matinee).  Seniors and student discounts on Tuesdays.  If you're planning to buy a coke or any bottled drinks from the vending machines, the ones on the main floor are cheaper ($2 per bottle vs. $3.75 per bottle on the other floors).  There is a lovely grassy lawn right outside the building--a good place for the little ones to run around or for lunch picnics after or before your movie!

"Is being redone, hopefully for the best"

The Metreon was a mix of highs and lows. Certain things we loved: the food area, the Where the Wild Things are exhibits (gone), the Sony store (half gone), and the complex opening to the Yerba Buena Gardens. But some things were not very successful with many stores closing all the times, new ones opening, part of the complex with no natural light coming from the side of the building.
They are redoing it, hopefully for the best!

"Metreon is in transition"

The Metreon is in transition. The Sony Store has closed, as have many other shops. Currently there's still a food court, and the movie theater, and some shops here and there. I've heard rumors that they are going to renovate the building, as there seems to be no effort applied to getting shops into the upper floors.

In the meantime, they have a farmers market on the bottom floor.

I would say that for now, it's not worth a special trip to visit, although if you are in SF, there are kid friendly activities nearby.

"Movie theater, arcade and video game store"

The Metreon was really popular when it first opened.  It is still a fun place to go but has lost some of its appeal, I think.  There's a movie theater that plays current movies, an arcade and virtual bowling on the top floor and Playstation and Sony stores.  Overall, this could be a fun place to visit for a little while especially if your kids are into video games!

"Metreon Used to be More Fun"

There used to be a kids cafe on the top floor that was based around Maurice Sendak's The Night Kitchen.  That was a lot of fun for the younger kids.  There also used to be a great comic book shop that is no longer in business.  On the plus side there are still the Playstation and Sony stores.  There are a few things to entertain kids that are free such as games on the floor that you interact with by stomping your feet.  There is a nice movie theater and arcade on the middle level and lots of restgaruants on the bottom.  One thing to keep in mind is that to enjoy the Metreon you will have to spend plenty of money.

"Fun with the Family"

A four-story silvery dazzler of a family entertainment complex, Metreon houses a 3-DIMAX theater and fourteen more movie screens, several restaurants, shops, and a children’s world of interactive play. The place is pricey, commercial, bustling, and great fun; it can be rather overwhelming for toddlers. Browse in Sony Style, among the high-tech games and gadgets, and in PlayStation, the first and only completely hands-on game store. Digital Solutions is a marvel of entertainment and technology, featuring Sony Music, ImageStation, Screenblast, Everquest, and Sony Eco.
Things From Another World specializes in movies, comics, and pop culture collectibles, action figures, model kits, and more. The Games Workshop is the world’s largest tabletop gaming store. You could leave teenagers here for hours.
At Portal One are surreal games and interactive experiences, such as karaoke for your feet at Dance Dance Revolution; HyperBowl virtual bowling; Quaternia, a capture-the-flag game in a strange feudal world; and the Extreme Sports Adventure Room. Lots of places to spend money, lots to see that is free.
A wide variety of restaurants includes A Taste of San Francisco—designed to be a street of city neighborhoods—sushi at Sanraku, Mexican food at Luna Azul, pasta and pizza at Firewood Cafe, Asian food at Long Life Noodle and Jook Joint, sweets at Just Desserts. A destnation in itself, the glass lobby offers a panoramic view of the high-rise skyline.

"Bowling - the new way"

You can quickly burn through your cash at the Metreon's video game room, but there is a deal hidden there! VIRTUAL BOWLING!

You get to pick "where" you bowl, i.e. San Francisco, a pirate ship, etc...and instead of picking up a ball and rolling it, you spin a ball on a platform. It is pretty hard, but fun to try and cheer on your kids and their friends! You get to bowl a full game, so it takes awhile and is really fun!

Perfect for teenagers, but the younger ones will enjoy it too!

"Fun but crowded"

little ones get a kick out of the interactive screen on the floor. everyone seems to love it, so it can get really crowded. if your kid in on the passive side, this can be a rough experience. it's nice to pair this with the yerba buena garden for a good mix of indoor and outdoor fun.

"Fun for all ages"

This is a fun place to go for a respite.  There is a lot to do.  There is a movie theater, game room, and lots of restaurants.  In the lobby, there are interactive games the kids can play for free.  Plus, there is a little park and fountain outdoors.  Sometimes, there are even special exhibits.  They have a website which is good to check out current goings on.  The movie theater is very nice and kid friendly - exits are monitored by employees.  The food choices for the movie theater are also very good.  Check it out!
