Fun and learning never end at McWane Science Center, a nonprofit, hands-on museum and IMAX Dome Theater. Four floors of interactive exhibits celebrate science and wonder — from an amazing collection of dinosaurs to innovative environmental showcases, imaginative early childhood playgrounds, and an awe-inspiring aquarium.
This science center is amazing! It has something for kids of all ages. We took little ones, 3 and under and they had a blast. On the top floor there is a space just for little ones to play and interact with cool things. It is large so plan accordingly. We were there about 2 hours and we didn't do it all. They have a dinosaur exhibit that we didn't go to but that's because the kids were having fun playing on the top floor. They have a really cool shark and sting-ray exhibit where you can touch them! They also have an I-MAX theatre. We went on a Wednesday in the morning and it was crowded but by lunch time things had cleared out. It is affordable and a fun place to enjoy and interact with your kids!
The McWane Center is an amazing science and learning center in Birmingham, AL. If you are driving through it is a must see. There are activities for all ages and they are constantly adding new exhibits. There are currently four levels to explore along with and Imax movie theater. Some of the exhibits my kids enjoy the most are the touch aquarium (you can pet sharks and stingrays), water table, play structure, bubble maker (what kids doesn't like making bubbles). There are so many exhibits and what I love is that the older my kids get there is always something new for them to discover. There is also a cafe there that sells healthy lunch options.
We love the McWane Science Center. They have an IMAX which shows some really neat movies. The exhibits are rotated regularly so that there is always some new to discover. This place never gets old! Fun for the whole family. My daughter enjoyed "digging" for dinosaur bones.
I think every parent should take their child to a science center like this. It not only sparks imagination but creativity as well. The McWane Science center is great! It has plenty of activities in a very hands on environment. It even has a giant movie theater, where you can watch animals, creatures under the sea, all kinds of things! Definitely would recommend!
I feel like a little kid every time we come here! It is always so exciting. New things every 2-3 months on their 3rd floor (the revolving exhibits are done there. Plus!!! The Tiny Magic City is there for the little toddlers to get out and play with everything! On the main floor there is also an indoor playground type of area with slides and water activities and soft jumpy pits. Good times. My son loves it (he is 16 months old) and never wants to leave!
We buy a season pass to the McWane Center every year. We haven't been disappointed yet. Every time we go, we spend most of our time on one level/floor so each visit is different. There are 4 levels of fun!!! We have our favorites that we have to do every time.....the bed of nails, the rope pull, the indoor tree house, the butterfly wall, and live weather reports. If you homeschool, you will LOVE the McWane Center.
The McWane Science Center is quite a gem in downtown Birmingham! As new residents to Alabama, I took my daughter on a trip to visit the center. I was quite impressed, as the museum is well-maintained and the staff is extremely friendly. While at the museum, we took advantage of the IMAX movies that were playing, as well as toured the museum's three levels. One of our favorite sections was the dinosaur floor. My 6-year-old loved being able to dig for dinosaur fossils. Since our visit, we have returned for an overnight event at McWane and had an amazing time. I would highly recommend this museum to anyone visiting the Birmingham area.
Calling all homeschool moms. Calling all homeschool moms. There are very few places where your kiddos can have a good time AND LEARN TOO! Next time you need a great science lesson, let the people at mcwane help you out! There are tons of fun things to do for toddlers through adults! Also, make sure you check out the imax while you are there :)
I first took my son here when he was 2 1/2; he is 5 now and still begs to go AND he remember specific exhibits that were only up for a short time.
I love that there is a special area just for very small children. It is partitioned off and it makes it easy for you as a parent to plant yourself in one place and still be able to keep an eye on your child as they play. Also in that area is a nursing room with a window where you can look out to keep an eye on your child but no one can look in on you. Very awesome.
If you plan to go more than twice, get the year long membership. It pays for itself, and gives you free parking, woohoo!
We took a 17 year old, an 11 year old, and a 10 year old to the McWane Science Center and they all had a ball. There were so many fun activities for every age. There is a really fun looking play area for the under 5 set and lots of scientific, educational fun experiments for the tweens and teens. The shark and ray touch tank was a big hit, along with the green screen game. There is also an Imax theater on site, although we did not have a chance to visit this time.
