Join us for a provocative journey through space and time. From sea level to the high alpine witness the dramatic diversity of our island's landscape. After a hot, picnic-style dinner we make our way to the summit of Hawaii's most sacred mountain for a sensational sunset amidst the largest collection of telescopes on earth. As daylight fades we descend to a lower elevation where your Interpretive Guide will reveal the wonders of our Hawaiian night skies.
Schedule: Afternoon trips depart daily from Hawaii Forest and Trail Headquarters, Waikoloa Kings' Shops, and the Junction of Highways 190 and 200. 7 - 8 hours round trip.
Included in the Tour: Picnic style dinner (your choice of hearty vegetable or beef stew and cornbread muffins), assorted teas, hot chocolate, and dessert.
Gear Provided: Hooded parkas and warm gloves.
Group Size: Tour limited to a maximum of 12 guests.
Restrictions: Guests should be able to hike on uneven or rocky terrain. We sometimes encounter cool, wet or muddy conditions. Because of high altitude this tour is not advised for those with respiratory, circulatory or heart conditions, pregnancy or poor health. Scuba divers should be aware of altitude dangers. No children under 16. Other tour restrictions may apply.
What to Bring & Wear: Closed toe shoes, long pants, a sweatshirt/sweater.
This was truly another one of those once in a life time activities, it was amazing! They pick you up and one over several stops and you begin to make your way through the center of the island to the tallest point of the big Island. On your way up the discuss history and natural aspects of the island.
When you reach the mountain you get out at a kind of base camp/shop. You eat dinner can watch a quick video. Then you big to make the trip to the top of the mountian, they pass out snow gear and when you exut you are thankful they did! We were there in July and it was freezing!
The view from the top of the mountain was breath taking....we took so many pictures I was surprised we did not use the entire 1GB. Afterward you go back to base camp area and go off the side of the road and you are given an astronomy lesson amongst the stars while drinking CoCoa! The guides have laser pionters and a telescope for the moon. Overall, this trip was amazing!
Witness panoramic views of eerie landscapes reminiscent of an alien environment found in a science fiction book, as well as the spectacular color show when day fades to night. The guide reveals the treasures of the night sky through a personal, private telescope (conditions permitting). Guides pick up and drop off at Kailua-Kona or the Kings’ Shops in Waikoloa. Warm hooded parkas and gloves are provided, along with a soup-and-sandwich supper and hot beverages. The trip lasts between six and eight hours.
