I have tried several different shave ices and Matsumoto is by far the best I have had. Typically there is a line out the door. But don't let that discourage you. They are very quick and it is well worth any wait you might have. Especially for only a couple of dollars
Tip 1: pay for the plastic cup the cone goes into. They make the shave ice so tall that if you don't have the cup, you are going to lose a lot of the ice to the pavement. If you plan on going back another day, the plastic cups are reusable
Tip 2: If you pair the shave ice with ice cream, it helps keep all of the flavoring in the ice, otherwise you may discover a TON of leakage out of your cone (another reason to get the plastic cup)
Tip 3: If you haven't tried shave ice with the beans, its worth a try. Personally, I don't think it is delicious, but when in Rome... =)
This is by far the best shave ice on the island. I especially loved getting it with ice cream on the bottom. You can tell it's great because there's always a line out the door. But don't worry, it moves fast! It's also a great stop to get some cute Hawaiian souvenirs.
The line may be long but it's definitely worth the wait. Matsumoto has one of the best Shave Ice on the Island. You can even add ice cream or azuki beans to whichever flavor you choose.
Take a look around their family owned store and you'll get a feel of old Hawaii. They also have lots of great gift items to take home with you!
If you're staying in Waikiki, it took you a long time to get to Haleiwa, and if you leave without a shave ice, what's the point? You'll understand the attraction after you have one. Don't let the long line worry you -- these guys have it down to a science, and it moves fast. Might have to park a ways off, and watch the kids -- it's right on a busy highway. If shave ice doesn't attract you, the place really is a general store, with all sorts of other goodies. Sneaky hint, though: if the line's really terrible, there's a place called Aoki's about fifty yards to the left, which sells shave ice every bit as good. And the outside garbage cans attract a lot of bees, so watchit!
If you're already on the North Shore, don't forget to visit the infamous Matsumoto Shave Ice in Haleiwa. You can tell it's a tourist spot from the long line, but there are locals who love it too.
When I lived there, I would hear about it but didn't get the hype - it's just a snow cone. But when my sister visited, I wanted to try it out with her. Well to my surprise it wasn't just a snowcone.
There are so many combinations of flavors you could get. I went ahead and got the rainbow. You're able to add ice cream on the bottom (recommended) and add sweetened condensed mik on top (another recommendation) Then sit outside and enjoy your treat!
