Located on a 38-mile-long barrier island, Matagorda Island WMA is one place you’re certain to find uncrowded beaches. The fragile island, as narrow as .75 mile wide in some places, is both a state park and a national wildlife refuge. The island remains relatively secluded because the only access is by boat, either your own or a rental; ferry service has been discontinued. Once on the island you can fish, hunt, hike, bicycle, comb the beach, swim, get some sun, or camp out.
