These springs are the largest attraction in the Mammoth District. Hot water rises up through the limestone dissolving large amounts of the rock leaving a chalky white mineral remaining on the surface. Gotta love the scent of sulfur. You can observe the sulphur terraces via the Upper Terrace Loop Drive (1.5 miles). There is a campground located at Mammoth Hot Springs.
Our son loved this place! He thought the hot smoke coming out of the ground was magical or something, and it looked like it was. A great place to get out of the car to walk around a bit after a lot of driving. Side note, though, don't go if you're pregnant and smells get to you. Horrible smelling place!
Imagine watching rock from right before your eyes. That's what you get to see here at Mammoth Hot Springs. The terrace formations can grow up to 3 feet in one year, so appearances can change dramatically. The beautiful multi-colored terraces are lovely, imposing and delicate at the same time. Remember to make it to the top of the terraces and look over the multi-colored pools formed by the hot springs against the backdrop of the mountains.
