As a kid I was obsessed with teh Mackinaw Bridge and we so excited to walk it when I was 5. I wanted to walk the whole 5 miles by myself but my parents pushed a stroller knowing I'd need it. I did make it through the whole walk but did use the stroller as soon as we were off the bridge. We walked again when my brother was 5 and now I'm just waiting for my daughter to turn 5 so she can walk the 5 miles herself.
As a bridge that is usually only open to cars it's neat so see the masses of people walking across. Parts of the bridge have grates so you can look down while walking and see the water and boats under you...very neat!
On Labor Day weekend they open the bridge to the UP to walk across. If you have ever driven across, you know its so beautiful!! its a long walk and can be windy, so keep it to the older kids.
Bring your camera because the photo ops are awesome!
Not for anyone afraid of bridges or heights. It can be a little scary, even knowing you are safe!
Every year, you can walk the Mackinac bridge on Labor Day. It's quite a long walk (5 miles, I think), but it's so beautiful to see the scenery while you're walking. If you like to walk on nice days & love looking at scenery, then this is the activity for you!!!
This is an absolute must if you are in the area. The Mackinac bridge is an absolute wonder and a gem. I find the history and building of this massive structure to be fascinating. If you are in the area and interested in modern wonders and history, I would definitely stop here.
You can walk Macinac brige at Labor day morning. I walked with stroller. It was very nice walk and view and quite exciting. Walkers begin on the St. Ignace side of the bridge and you could use bus (around $5) on one way. We are very slow walker so it was almost last minites to goal then bridge was open again for trafic
right next to us. At last, they gave us a certification!!
