Mackerel Cove is the perfect beach for families. Because it is a cove, the beach itself is protected from the rough ocean surf. On occasion, there are a few good rollers coming in, but typically speaking the waves are very gentle. If you can time your trip to the beach to coincide with low-tide, the beach becomes a lesson in oceanography. With a sand bar that spans the length of the beach, even the little ones can go "far out" as my daughter says and still not be above his/her waist. In fact, most of the water is only knee deep at low tide.
This summer, my kids and I found countless clams, hermit crabs, saw sea gulls, searched for sea glass, passed by some jelly fish (the non-stinging kind) and even found a sea horse!
If you are not a town resident, the charge is $15 per carload - absolutely worth it for a wonderful day at the beach. To top it all off, there is a Del's Frozen Lemonade truck parked at the beach to make it a true Rhode Island experience!
