This park has several distinct areas, all along or near US 290 between Johnson Cityand Stonewall. Tours of the LBJ Ranch ($), just across the Pedernales (LBJ pronounced it Purrrr-din-alice) River from the state park area, depart from the visitor center 10:00A.M.to 4:00 P.M.daily. The center features exhibits on Lyndon Johnson and on the his-tory and wildlife of the Hill Country. A nature trail winds past wildlife enclosures with buffalo, deer, turkey, and longhorn cattle, and through beautiful wildflower fields. LBJ’s gravesite is also located here.In addition, the state park facility caters to families by providing tennis courts, aswimming pool, picnic areas, a baseball field, and fishing opportunities along the Pedernales. Also part of the park is the Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm, a place childrenlove. Costumed interpreters carry out the day-to-day activities of a typical turn-of-thtwentieth-century Hill Country farm. Kids can see the hogs get slopped, the livestock fed, eggs collected, butter churned, and cheese made. They might see a farmerplowing the garden with a team of horses or catch a meal being made from scratch.
No entrance fee. Activity fees for pool use, amphitheater, and group picnic areas apply. See website for details.
We stopped here just as a way to stretch our legs on the way to Fredericksburg and we are glad we did!
It's a very pretty park (early March, so I'm sure it's much prettier in late spring and summer). We took the free driving tour (audio CD that they provide you) and really enjoyed the little tour of the old home and the drive along the Pedernales River where LBJ was born, raised and now rests.
There is also a home called the Texas White House that you can tour for $2/person.
It was a very enjoyable little diversion for our family.
