We love to make the drive to Lyman Orchards for their sunflower maze. Each year it is a different design, and they offer clues of differing levels from preschoolers to history buffs so everyone has a chance to find their way through. They also have a corn maze in the fall. Lyman also offers fantastic pick-your-own fruit as well as a fully-stocked shop with fresh produce and baked goods. They have activities throughout the year for kids like cookie decorating and gingerbread workshops.
My family goes here every fall. It is a tradition of ours. We take the kids- 9 months and 3 years. The 3 year old LOVES it and her favorite part is the hayride. You get to take a hayride out to the orchards. After you pick what specific variety you want, it brings you back. It is very scenic and the staff are friendly and helpful I needed some help about what apples to pick for applesauce and the staff were VERY knowledgable. I would also recomend picking up one of their apple pies and some cider.
This was high-end picking with fabulous prices. Apples $1.10 lb.; peaches 1.25 lb., August 2010. The fields were clean, and the grass cut under the trees in the orchards. The views of the surrounding hills were outstanding. The staff friendly and pleasant at each stand. It's early for peaches and apples, so, the fruit needs to ripen still, but looks great. There is an absolutely fantastic sunflower maze (think summer version of a corn maze.). It costs $9 per person, and children under 4 are free. I'd normally balk at the price, however, the orchard donates a portion of the fee to CT Children's Hospital. They have donated more than 15K to the hospital in 3 years. Really commendable. It was very fun, and with cute clues to help find your way out of the maze. They have a farm store called the Apple Barrel. They sell fresh pressed, pasteurized apple cider--delicious, fruits, veggies, lunches, soda and water, etc. Bought a peach pie with crumbs, and it was WONDERFUL. Could have eaten it all myself! I highly recommend this place. We went late in the day because of the heat, but the vast size of this orchard warrants AT LEAST a full day. My daughter loved picking apples and peaches today, and is still very excited about all of those sunflowers. What a great day!
