This is a small zoo that is home to 200 animals representing 70 species. Aside from touring the zoo which is located on a 1,100acre nature preserve, the zoo also offers educational programs and family friendly events. They are opened year-round which is nice if you have a warm-ish winter day and need to get the kids out of the house.
I have taken my 2 year old a number of times this past year, and am sorry I did not purchase the membership. It is $9.75 for me each time and she is free, kids 2-11 it costs $7.75
If you do purchase the membership (or have another Zoo Membership) it can be honored at other zoo's as well. I think the zoo itself has to be approved or be a member of the zoological something or other.
The LV zoo is well laid out in a large oval, so you never feel like you are doubling back or missing something. They are taking great strides to try to update the zoo. It used to just be pretty much a wall of fencing with animals behind it, now they have "opened up" the enclosures by building ramp like structures that rise several feet off the ground so you almost walk up and in some cases almost over the animals. You can actually walk into the kangaroo habitat on a roped off path which is pretty neat.
I did notice that when sitting in the stroller my tot has a hard time seeing everything, there always seems to be a railing in her way.
There is a playground in the zoo, and pony rides, they have paddle boats but I have never seen them operational this past year. There is a gift shop and a commissary. They have a stroller rental. And they have recently re-done their restrooms and they are very nice now.
It takes us about an hour to an hour and a half to walk through the zoo, including a stop at the playground. My daughter loves to drive through the river on the way out of the park. Yes, I said through the river, they have built a "shelf" for you to drive on safely through the river.
If you are local it is a nice way to spend a couple of hours. But I don't think I'd drive more than 45 minutes to get here. If you are visiting the Lehigh Valley and want something to fill a morning this may be worth a look-see.
