"Fun with the Family"

When it was built in 1827, Long Point was the center of a busy fishing community on the tip of the Cape. Now isolated at the end of a long breakwater, Long Point Lighthouse (and its companion, Wood End) can best be viewed from the rotary at the end of Commercial Street (while you’re here, look for the plaque that commemorates the first landing place of the Pilgrims). If your family is up for a long walk along a rocky breakwater, park the car at the rotary and walk along the breakwater for about half an hour to reach Long Point. Another half-hour walk, to the end of the breakwater, will lead to Wood End Lighthouse. The unusual tower is square; most lighthouses are circular. Wood End was built in 1873. It flashes a red light every fifteen seconds, whereas Long Point flashes a green light; together they mark Provincetown Harbor’s entrance. CAUTION: It’s a long walk—bring something to drink and watch the tides.
