Don't let the name deceive you, Living History Farms is far more than just a farm! While you can learn a lot about farming in bygone times, the attractions also include an old town with everything from a Blacksmith to a printers and a general store. There really is something for everyone. Townspeople are dressed in period clothes and interact with visitors.
Living History Farms is especially memorable at Christmas. You can visit the decorated mansion, print Christmas cards at the printer, and see all sorts of demonstrations.
We used to live only 30 minutes from here, and visited often. It's a blast! They have different activities for the different seasons, but they are all fun. They historic village and farm are beautifully maintained. You can literally take a walk through history, there's even an Indian village. The animals will keep your young children well entertained too. Great place to visit for all ages!
We really liked the variety of activities for little kids as well as a variety of animals. Its easy to find and a fun place to take kids if you're in the Des Moines area. A tip for visitors looking for a great place to eat near Living History Farms...go to The Machine Shed.best food ever, plus carries over the farm-like atmosphere.
Living History Farms is so fun! We took a 2 year old, but it is definitely an all ages attraction. They have lots of farm animals. Everyone working there is dressed in attire appropriate to the time period of their exhibit. Just watch out for how truly authentic the farms are. We walked in a turkey getting its head chopped off, luckily little one didn't see it!
Live in the past for a day! You can churn butter to spread on toast. Roll in the hay. Play with the animals and tour old homes. This is a guided tour by actors in costume. They are more than willing to answer any questions and are very educated! This is such a fun way for kids to learn about their history!
With farm communities from different eras, this is an excellent place to learn about the history of agriculture. Special activities like the Halloween event are well-planned and fun for families. This is another spot we'd like to visit again.
