Our kids love the sand and just hanging out. This park is a 2,500-acre barrier island on the northeast coast of Florida. There are five miles of beachfront, salt marshes and sand dunes, all of which give visitors the opportunity to observe the animals and plants of the park in their natural state. Located about 20 miles from Jacksonville, FL.
Little Talbot Island’s coastline is distinguished on one side by vegetated dunes and gorgeous, empty beach, while the other side is given over to salt marshlands. Birdwatchers find lots to enjoy. Anglers can cast in salt or fresh water.
Make yourself at home in the picnic or camp area. Hiking trails follow the path of early missionaries, conquerors, and plantation owners. The beach at Big Talbot Island, to the north, is even less populated and edged by sand bluffs. It is part of the state park, but admission is only $1 for parking there (no facilities). Call Kayak Amelia at (888) 305-2925 for guided paddle tours and/or rentals.
I am going to rate all of these together: Fort Caroline, Huguenot, Big Talbot and Little Talbot and more - We are a very "outdoors family". There are several parks on the Northeast side of Jax that we have visited including Little and Big Talbot. Little Talbot is definitely better for kids. It is more open, wider beaches, restroom facilities, bike trails and picnic areas. Big Talbot is great, but more remote and less amenities. The kids love Huguenot because you can drive your car on the beach and take you dog. They liked the museum and hiking trail down to the recreated fort at Fort Caroline. They did not enjoy the big hike down to the lookout. We have a video with all of these places and more, so if you watch it you can get a better idea of what is best for you and your kids. The video is at www.armadillopepper.com. Click the "Fun Stuff" link and watch the video "Jacksonville, FL Great Outdoors". We will have another video in about a month that highlights the natural springs in the Ocala National Forest.
Walking and playing on the beach was great. Our 16 month old had a great time, though we didn't go far.
