"Letchworth State Park"

This is one of the most beautiful places to go in NY during in autumn.  The changing colors of the leaves on the trees along with the view will leave you breathless.  There are lots of hiking trails that you can do.  There are also picnic tables if you want to have a picnic while you're here with kids.

"Never Gets Old"

I have always loved going to Letchworth State Park.  My friends and I used to pack a lunch and head there for a beautiful walk along the gorge.  My husband and I even spent a day there for our anniversary one year (which is in late September when the park is covered in fall colors).  This past weekend was the first time we brought our kids (8, 7 and almost 5), and they loved it!  In fact, I had to promise them that we would go back some Saturday this summer to see even more of the park.

There are trails all over, and they have a trail map which is fairly easy to follow.  It will tell you how long each trail is, and what activity level (low, moderate, high).  It even tells you whether you can walk, ride horseback, bike, or ski on the trail.  Trail #1 is the main trail that takes you all over the park following the gorge.  This is the trail we typically walk.

This weekend we parked up by the Portage Railroad Bridge (which replaced the old wooden bridge in 1875) at the Upper Falls, and made our way down trail #1 to the Middle Falls and the Glen Iris Inn (Estate of William Pryor Letchworth).  My kids loved seeing the falls, and we were even able to see a double rainbow!

We also walked trail #5 near the Lower Falls for the first time this weekend, and it's a great trail to walk.  It's easy, and half a mile.  The first thing you do is walk down the hill, and then there 's a fork in the road.  We decided to go right at first, and that took us to the Genesee River.  There was some sand and a lot of big rocks to sit on.  When we were done there we walked back to the fork and took the other path which led us to another part of the river.  We spent more time there skipping rocks, and my kids came home with a few they really liked.

Because we promised them that we would see all three sets of falls, we took them to the Lower Falls the next morning before heading home.  That will be our first stop when we go back so we can have more time there, as well as the foot bridge that crosses to the other side.

There are bathrooms, gift shops, and snack shops (with ice cream!)  all along the main trail, and there's even a playground down near the Lower Falls Restaurant.  There is so much to see and explore at Letchworth, including the museum and the Indian Council grounds.  The home Mary Jemison ("The White Woman") made for her 2nd daughter, Nancy, is also there to see.

Letchworth is filled with rich history, and it's the perfect place for a family who wants beautiful views, and either an active day or a leisurely day.  It's what you make of it.

"Good camping! "

We camped with our family and friends here. It is a beautiful park! It is about 30 minutes south of Rochester and very easy to get to. Nice campsites and amenities. Even if you wanted to do a day trip, it is a fun place for swimming, picnicing and hiking.  There is also at least one playground. It is very pretty in the summer and especially the fall.  They call this park "The Grand Canyon of the East" as the Genessee River runs through it and there are many amazing waterfalls. Bring your camera for some great family photos!

"beautiful!"

This park is gorgeous, especially in the fall. Scenic trails give plenty of hiking for older children and adults, while there are also playgrounds and open space for smaller children to enjoy as well. An annual fall craft show is a popular event at the park, and the foliage can't be beat. A small museum and historical Native American houses are in the park for older kids who may enjoy history.

"Grand Canyon of the East"

Growing up within 30 minutes of Letchworth made going there easy to do!  The annual craft show is AMAZING!!!  Camping is fun!  You can snowmobile in the winter.

The Waterfalls are so easy to look at, calming, relaxing, and inspirational.  Many photographers and artists choose "Inspiration Point" as their inspiration for their art.

"Fun with the Family"

Stretching for 14,350 acres along the Genesee River, this vast park has a variety of activities for families. Perhaps one of the prettiest sights in the state is the 17-mile scenic Letchworth Gorge, the river’s work in progress for thousands of years, nicnamed the “Grand Canyon of the East.” The three waterfalls that glisten through the gorge were saved from hydroelectric power plant destruction by William P. Letcworth, who deeded much of this area to the people of New York in 1910. Pool swiming, fishing, hiking, bicycling, boating, and cross-country skiing are favorite activities, and there are picnic and playground areas, campsites, and cabins available.
