Lava Tree State Park

Lava Tree State Park is an unusual geological formation that’s definitely worth a detour. It was formed in 1790 when a quick-moving lava flow slammed into an ohia forest. The lava crept up the tree trunks, but the interiors of the trunks were too moist and cool to become engulfed in flames as one would expect. Instead, the lava cooled and solidified, covering up all the land that held the roots of the ohia trees. What’s left is the site you see today. Huge trees stand like ominous statues, looking like fearsome guards forbidding you to enter. The hike here takes about a half hour and is well suited for children.
