Two meandering, warm bodies of water, Lake McClure and Lake McSwain form a sprawling, multifaceted recreation area popular with houseboaters, water-skiers, and campers year-round. Activities and public facilities cluster around five marinas, at elvations of 400 to 1,000 feet, in pine and oak woodland settings. Summers are quite dry and very warm; daytime temperatures reach into the nineties and the low hundreds, perfect for swimming and lying on sandy beaches.
Six hundred campsites are available at the two lakes, many with shade and RV hookups. The cooler the season, the better the fishing in the lakes for the stocked fish: trout, king salmon, bass, crapie, catfish, and shad. McClure has over 80 miles of shoreline and is a buzz in the summertime with fishing boats, waverunners, houseboats, patio boats, and ski boats, which are available to rent at the marinas. Swimming is primarily near the campgrounds. If you crave a quieter experience, with no waterskiing or houseboating allowed, the smaller Lake McSwain is your best bet. You can fish for trout here and enjoy the nice swimming beach.
