Lake Tohopekaliga (or Toho to the locals) comes from the Indian words for "Sleeping Tiger" because the lake is often like a sleeping tiger. Mild when the weather is calm and sunny, but wakes up like a roaring tiger when the rain is coming in (usually around 3:00pm every afternoon!) Then Lake looks more like the ocean tides! However, the Lakefront is a great place for a picnic and free place to run and play on the great playground.
Just a short walk to downtown Kissimmee, stop in at Robinson's for breakfast or lunch. The burgers are yummo and lunch for a family of four will set you back less than $20 (with softdrinks) It's a throw back to the ol' times with a pharmacy attached. The downtown area is trying to re-vamp, unfortunately they took out the small movie theater that was a staple growing up!
This is a great place for a picnic lunch and family exercise on the lake; a marina rents fishing boats. Buy an ice-cream cone from the caboose stand, burn it off on the playground, and walk up Monument Avenue to give the kids a painless geography lesson at Monument of States, a 1940s sculpture composed of geological contributions from every state (except Hawaii and Alaska, which didn’t join the Union until later).
