La Jolla Cove, La Jolla, California

Type: Beaches & Lakes and Nature & Gardens
Ages: All Ages
Cost: Free

Several Beaches along a great stretch of beachline offering everything from hiking, sight seeing, tidal pools, sand play, bodysurfing, snorkling, adventuring for ages young to old. Very family friendly. Parking is not the easiest, we drove around for 15 minutes looking for a spot but one plus is that all parking is  close to beach access even if you park on an off street your walk will not be far.

"another world"

For us, starfish is the main attraction of the day. Before you come, check the time for low tide. It is a safer time to visit and more things to see at  low tide. If you pay attention you might be lucky to see the hermit crabs battling each other for competition of bigger new shell. My niece plays with the ''sticky'' hairy anemonies, but I told her not to poke the middle. Bigger kid could snorkel and see garibaldies (our state fish you know that?? and very protective daddies). If you lucky you could also catch a glimpse of the seals up close and personal or better yet seeing stingray in action. The stingrays look like they are flying in water. Important for everybody, don't get too close. Hungry after swim? just walk a little bit uphill then enjoy the la jolla downtown.

"Cool"

Tide pools are always fascinating to me and my 2 small children.  If you go at the right time you can see octopus as well.  You need to wear water shoes with good traction because the rocks get really slippery.  This is a great way to make a day out of going to the beach and making it educational.  We love going here in the early summer.

"beach with more"

This is a great beach for the kids to do the usual building of sand castles and swimming, but also there is a nice path where you can walk with strollers while enjoying the view.  Also, make sure to walk out on the pier and look at all the sea lions sunning themselves.  They are so cute and it is fun to look for the pups.

"La Jolla Cove"

We have visited La Jolla Cove twice now and it is one of our favorite places to visit.  We went the first week in May both times and we were able to see many seals on the beach and swimming just off-shore.  I am not sure if they are here year round or just this time of year, but they are definitely a sight to see.  You can walk along the boardwalk so that you are just a few feet away from them.  Our seven year old son and three year old daughter loved it!  There is also a nice grassy area just between the road and the beach that is perfect for picnics.  There are places to barbeque as well as tables!  If you bring your own lunch/dinner this is a very inexpensive family outing that is a lot of fun!

"Swimming seals"

Great place to hike and look at the family of seals bobbing their heads up here and there. From the boardwalk, kids love to count the colorful kayaks that make their way to the caves.  Hold onto your little ones if you walk the planks.  Strollers can only wheel around the paths near the road.

"La Jolla Cove"

We only made it to one of the little inlets of this great stretch of beach and it was fantastic!!! We saw squid and many fish swimming close to the beach as well as a seal off of one of the outcroppings sunning himself! Waves were nice for the kids to run and play in, this is very family friendly, we met nice people from all over the country and the kids made new friends! I only gave 4 stars as parking is hard to come by and you may have to walk a ways to get to the area of beach you are looking for as there are many beaches.
