Each Wednesday and Friday evening, Kona Village celebrates the culture and heritage of our island home. The island’s longest-running lu‘au begins with the unveiling of traditionally prepared foods in an imu (Hawaiian earthen oven) and on Friday’s, also the umu (Polynesian earthen oven). A sumptuous buffet showcases heritage foods such as kalua pig, lomi lomi salmon and poi alongside modern favorites including fresh island fish, tasty chicken and tropical fruits. Enjoy a complimentary libation along with your meal. Each ‘Aha‘aina honors old traditions while adopting decidedly upbeat formats.

In a land of touristy money sucks, this place is truly an oasis- a respite from the cell phone, from the hustle and bustle and from the cheeze and chintz. Kona Village has become, at least in my mind, an institution on this island. We can only hope the rebuild will actually happen, and preserve the character it has always had.
One of the things that makes it so special is the authentic Imu, the pig, the taro, the dancing of the luau. Don't expect your kids to like, or eat, much of the food at this event, as it is quite authentic, but the entertainment, the whole experience is the best there is.
And once Kona Village is back up on its feet, it is the best place in all of Hawai'i for a true family vacation- not just a "family trip", a vacation.
The location and set up of this resort is wonderful, I was so hopeful for the Luau itself but I felt a little let down. It may have been that the last Luau I went to was so amazing that nothing can compare but I was a little disapointed. This luau was a little more touristy and had a cheesy feel to it. There were not a lot of things for the kids to do it was just more of a sit here and eat this event. They called people to the stage who were celebrating something but that was the extent to the interaction.
If you are island hoping have the chance to go to a luau an Oahu, I highly recommend the Paradise Cove Luau - nothing has even come close to it in my experience! The kids will love it!
Even if you’re not staying at the Kona Village Resort, take the road down from Highway 19 to walk around the property. Hotel rooms are authentic hales, or grass huts. There are no televisions or telephones; this resort is for people who really want to get away from it all. You can take a free tour of the resort and its surrounding historic sites daily at 11:00 a.m.
