Also known as the Hoapili Trail, the remains of the King's Trail are a bit south of La Perouse Bay. This 5 1⁄2-mile trail goes from La Perouse Bay over Maui’s last lava flow, which dates from 1790. Beyond La Perouse the road gets quite rough and is not recommended for cars, but it’s an easy hike. The trail leads over the same path used by the king’s tax collectors in Old Hawaii. At one point the path heads inland, past old stone foundations and walls, signs of an earlier civilization. Little offshoots of the main trail lead down to the ocean, where you’ll be treated to a wonderfully scenic view of Cape Hanamanioa and the Coast Guard lighthouse.
