"Fun with the Family"

The lighthouse was built in 1913 and played an important role when ships frequented this area traveling to and from Asia. Although its light was turned off permanently in 1976, the lighthouse is now preserved as a National Historic Landmark.

Kilauea is a favorite spot of naturalists and ornithologists because it’s a stopover site for such migrating seabirds as the Laysan albatross and the red-footed booby. But even ordinary folks will appreciate the great spectacle as the seabirds flit in and out of their nests within the crevices of these cliffs. Kilauea Point has the largest colony of seabirds in the state. Be sure to stop at the visitor center for free information about the birds. The center even lets visitors borrow binoculars for closer inspection of the flying creatures.

"Beatuiful views, open space, might get boring for kids"

This is the most northern point of Kauai, and Hawaii.  It served as a strategic point during WWII and there is actually a bunker nearby (but you can't see it from the Lighthouse Grounds).  The actual light house (which is really beautiful) is no longer in operation, they have replaced it with this ugly structure that does the job with fewer man-hours and more reliability.
The grounds have been turned into a bird reserve (several species migrate here), so you will see lots of different feather friends flying around, walking around, laying around, and doing their 'jobs'.  They really could not have picked a more scenic place to hang out, as the views are really breath taking.  It was fun to look for the ones that were hiding.  We kept our guy in the pack (as he was a new walker), but there is space for kids to run around.  There is not a lot of interactive stuff (there are some binoculars to look at things (birds/scenery), a video about the history of the location, some pictures and artifacts.  Having been the once, I don't know that we will return again.  We got our fill and have amazing pictures to relive it.  By the way, they are saying the prices are free.  We were charged $5 for each adult (seniors can buy a life membership for $10, service members get in free as do kids).
