This is the site of one the of fiercest battles or the Atlantia Campaign. Preserved are historic earthworks, cannon emplacements and monuments. Interpreted here are the historic events where over 5,350 soldiers were killed in the battle fought here from June 19, 1864 through July 2, 1864. A walk at Cheatham Hill heading towards the Illinois Monument.
I homeschool our 2 oldest boys (8 &11) so we're always on the lookout for field trips that combine fun and learning. Between the the museum and climb up the mountain itself, we covered history, reading (the historical & nature markers along the trail,) science, and lots and lots of P.E. The climb up the mountain was steep at times, so I don't recommend the under 5 crowd trying it, even though my youngest was 4 at the time and he had no problems. But he's always had the dexterity of a wild goat...
You can also drive up the mountain to see the view from the top. I believe the only restrooms are at the base in the museum, though. The museum was small but very informative, with lots of genuine Civil War uniforms and artifacts. There was also a short film about battles fought in the Atlanta vicinity. The museum and mountain hike are free, educational and fun, especially if you have kids that enjoy running and climbing.
Our visit to Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield was wonderful! We went on Memorial Day weekend on a Sunday afternoon, so we were able to have a picnic under a tree on a blanket before getting on with the activities of the day.
Once we finished eating we headed inside, where we saw the exhibits....which were quickly and suddenly overshadowed (even in our memories of the indoors) by the live exhibits outside. A group of re-enactors and professionals demonstrated how to load, fire and clean a cannon. It was impressive. (and loud)
We hiked to the top of the mountain on the hiking trails (no strollers)....and this was difficult as I was carrying a 1 year old. But on the way down we opted for the paved road. It's a little more distance because you're going AROUND the mountain instead of straight up and down it.
But we had a good time and got to experience beautiful views and nature up close and personal!
