Situated kitty-corner from Iolani Palace is Kawaiahao Church. The church was constructed from 1836 to 1842 under the supervision of its missionary minister, Hiram Bingham. More than 14,000 coral blocks were taken from offshore reefs to build the structure, and its 162-year-old weather-beaten facade remains a hearty testmony to the craftsmanship. This is Honolulu’s oldest church. During the heyday of the monarchy, it functioned as the royal chapel, where kings, queens, princes, and princesses came to pray. It was also the site of royal weddings, funerals, and inaugurations.
This is, after all, a church. I thought its simple elegance was wonderful, the grounds are spotless with many unique Hawaiian plants, and there are fascinating cemeteries attached (if you're into that sort of thing). Not much to entertain small children, however.
