Kaleidoscope was started to use scraps from Hallmark cards in a creative fun way for kids. The building is full of interesting sculptures and art that encourage a creative mind. Children and their families move around to different art stations and make crafts. Kaleidoscope staff provides a bag to keep all of your goodies in. The way this is all set up and presented you would really think that it should cost a lot to take your kids. This is a great stop.
The kaleidpscope has all kinds of hands on, crafty, messy projects for kids. They can create all kinds of treasures to take home. There are activities for a wide range of ages. Mom and Dad will have fun watching, but there isn't much particularly for adults.
We love to take our visiting kiddos to this place. Located in Crown Center, it's a bit difficult to get to, but SUCH a fun artistic activity. Kids line up to do different art projects in a really cool large room. They take their multiple projects home. If you're looking for a great place to take kids that does not cost a THiNG, take them to Kaleidoscope!
This place is a dream for kids. From glow in the dark paint, to make it and take it, to decorating with fabric and buttons, this place has it all. The kids spend several hours running from station to station, and were so excited by the freedom to explore wherever they wanted and move on when they were ready. It is set up in such a way that there are plenty of adults on hand to assist, but the kids really are in the driver's seat. Our favorite part was definitely the glow in the dark room!
Crayola's museum Kaleidoscope is a creative kids heaven. It's completely free, you just call ahead or come early for tickets. Once inside crayola has provided a treasure trove of supplies for kids to make whatever they'd like. My favorites are the puzzles and crowns. The only difficult part is that it's very very crowded most of the time and kids tend to run around. So not a relaxing adult place, but it's for the kids after all!
I grew up in the Kansas City, MO area and still love my hometown, even though I live on the East coast now.
On our last family trip back to KCMO, we were lucky enough to stay in the Plaza area, a wonderful place to walk around and shop with plenty of quintessential KC fountains and architecture.
At the absolute top of my list for family adventure was Hallmark's Kaleidoscope in the Crown Center area. Kaleidoscope made a deep impression on me as a grade schooler -- without a doubt, it was the biggest and brightest, most hands-on, kid-oriented field trip I ever took. I couldn't wait to share that with my own kids.
Things had changed quite a bit since my childhood, but Kaleidoscope is still completely kid-oriented. They don't do reservations for groups of less than 20, but we didn't have any problem getting in on a session with their first come, first served system. Each session is 40 minutes, and the time flies.
Once you enter the Kaleidoscope room for a session, let the kids lead the way. Of course, everyone expects basic courtesy, but there are no lines to wait, no do-this-then-that. Various stations are filled with recycled materials, paper cutouts, crayons, markers, ribbon, etc. Hallmark -- yup, the card folks -- also owns the Crayola company. At Kaleidoscope, you get the best of both worlds. Kids can make wall hangings, name plaques, crowns, their own puzzle, whatever. There are also some wild mirrors and a room for exploring. I won't give away too many surprises, but be prepared to let your kids bring out your creative side. Take home what you make.
And it's all FREE.
My son, who isn't really a crayons and craft kinda kid, still talks about the experience (nearly a year later) and wants to know when we can go back.
Their website is serviceable and has all the right information, but I found it a bit confusing and cumbersome to navigate. It's a grown-up informational page; there's nothing there for the kids. Do check the website for session times, what's on the calendar, and directions/ parking info.
