Hands down, Kailua Beach is my favorite place on Oahu. Two years ago it was a hidden gem, but now that it is known as Obama's favorite vacation spot, it has become a bit more populated and some what exploited. BUT, the water is still the color of turquoise and the sand is still white. The waters are swimmable and good for body surfing. My four year old began his day in floaties but took them off after awhile as long as I was standing right next to him. Many people rented kayaks and took them out to little islands a few hundred yards away. I didnt think my seven year old was quite ready for that, but in two years if we go back, that will be the first thing we do. The bathrooms are clean (as much as beach bathrooms can be) and there are a few trees for shade if you are lucky enough to get them. But the water, oh the water! Did I mention it was turquoise? From April to October there are often man-o-wars (jelly fish like guys) who show up and my daughter did get stung this time around by them. The lifeguards were really helpful and told us to rinse off the wound and gave us a heat back to put on it. The pain was gone within a half an hour but its still a bummer so beware. Next time, we'd definitely ask the lifeguards how the day was looking before we got in the water. The town of Kailua is about a half mile away and now that they have a Whole Foods, I'd suggest picking up some lunch there and making a day at the beach.
This is the type of beach I always pictured that I would find in Hawaii. Beautiful blue-green water, mountains, fine, soft sand, and sea turtles. This was by far my favorite spot on Oahu. My 3-year-old was a bit unhappy with the amount of wind and requested to return to hour hotel's beach in Waikiki, but the rest of the family could have stayed here for days. We watched kite boarders and kayakers, made sand castles, and watched the turtles swim around. There are enough waves to ride the boogie board but not huge surf like you find further along the North Shore. The restrooms were not the best--they felt dirty and run-down. There was a very nice grassy area for picnicking, and parking was free.
One of the most scenic beaches in all of Hawaii. Kailua Beach Park is a great place for the family to spend a day at the beach. There is a stretch of lawn in front of the beach for picnics and tossing the football or frisbee, the water is calm and inviting, and there are plenty of beach activities available for you family to chose from.
Visitors can easily launch a kayak from Kailua to visit Flat Island or the Moku'lua Islands. There are often kite boarders and wind surfers to watch. If you have bikes or are planning to rent some this is a good location to do it. The beach area and town of Kailua are covered with bike paths.
Depending on the season the beach can get quite narrow especially in the winter. The sand here is supper fine which makes it incredibly soft but also a bit messy.
Plan to picnic off the beach here because fine sand and wind make for a gritty sandwich. The water is pretty calm but can be a good site for those young ones who want to learn how to body board. It is a beautiful beach and the perfect spot to take that family photo for next years Christmas cards.
Parking here is limited and can fill up early. There are two lots. The first one fills up quickly because it is the one usually spotted first by tourist who are unaware that there is a larger lot just to the north that is actually a bit closer to the beach. There is additional parking along the road for days when its really crowded.
This is a popular and well known beach so it gets crowded on the weekends and holidays, but for good reason, its darn near perfect!
There is usually plenty of shade available. It is often a bit windy here so umbrellas do not fair well.
There are public facilities but bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer. There are a few food trucks that normally set up shop here for the day so food and drink should not be a problem.
While living in Honolulu, our family visited this beach almost once a week. It is just a beautiful stretch of sand, the waves weren't too rough for our toddler and it's very accessible. Cleaner changing facilities than most beaches and it wasn't usually super busy on weekdays. Like most beaches on the island, it can get very, very crowded on weekends, but still a great beach!
If you ride a wave, north is good. Ala moana or Waikiki beach are convenient if you stay in near Hotel. However, if you would like to enjoy the view, breeze and white sand that you dream about , I think Kailua beach is the only place I can imagine. With family or not, you can relax there.
If you are looking for a beautiful beach to spend the day relaxing in the sun, then Kailua beach is where you want to go. It is a far cry from the crowded tourist beaches in Waikiki and offers a serene place to send a great day with the family. The kids can play in the fine white sand building sand castles or splashing in the surf. This is by far our favorite beach on the island of Oahu.
Kailua Bay and Kailua Beach County Park outrank all other beaches on the island as the top choice for sailboarders. Not only do the experienced love to come here, but a variety of commercial outlets take first-timers here to learn.
In addition to sailboarders, the water often is chock-full of boats, Jet Skiers, and kayakers, all competing for the right-of-way. All this activity creates congestion that can be hazardous to a casual swimmer. You get the feeling that you’ve got to be moving pretty fast or get out of the way! If you’re there strictly for swimming, it’s best to stay in the shallow waters of the lagoon. The park does offer great picnic facilities,
showers, restrooms, lifeguards, and a snack bar.
