Tours run approximately 20 minutes. Admission: $3 adults and $2 children
They offer tours of the original bakery, during which each visitor is given their own piece of dough and taught how to twist a pretzel. Visitors will also see the original ovens built by Julius Sturgis and learn the history of pretzel baking in America.
We visited the area to see this and the Wilbur Chocolate Factory. We ate lunch in between the two places, and it was a perfect day for my husband, my 2 year old, my 3 year old, and me. Sturgis Pretzel Factory is a low key tour, and they are very tolerant of the little ones. We each got to learn how to shape our own pretzels, and my girls loved it. Free samples at the end were wonderful too.
I took my kids 11, 8 and 5 there, and it was a great tour that appealed to all three of them. It is brief, but really informative and fun. We each got a little bag of pretzels at the end and then went to the pretzel shop to buy more. I had THE BEST soft pretzel I'd ever eaten - one we'd watched be pulled from the oven while we were there! It's a quick, simple tour that kept everyone's attention without being too "boring" and "tiring".
In an unassuming little stone building in a row of little stone buildings in the little historic town of Lititz, PA lives The Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery. A visit to Dutch country is not complete without a stop at this little historical factory. For a nominal fee, visitors can tour the original pretzel bakery, try their skills in a pretzel twisting lesson and then watch as a master of the trade twists and bakes sourdough soft pretzels by hand (they are really fast, and put us all to shame). When you’re done with your tour you can shop for all kinds of yummy treats in the bakery store. You don’t get to eat your own pretzel (for health reasons, they can’t put it in their oven), but it’s still a blast trying to get those twists just right, and the kids get to do it too. It’s one my girls’ wish list for our next trip up to Pennsylvania. Note: While you’re in Lititz, you should also check out the Wilbur Chocolate Factory, just down the road.
This pretzel factory is located in the quaint and beautiful town of Lititz, PA. It is a very small and old fashioned type of place, but that makes it charming. It is neat to see the old kitchens and equipment and it is fun that everyone gets to make a pretzel. This makes a fun education outing for kids and adults alike.
Kids get a tour of the factory and learn how pretzels are made. A hard pretzel is your ticket. They never last long, though, as the kids EAT their ticket. HA! Kids (and adults) also get to twist their own pretzel. How cool is that??? Then, you can buy some of their yummy pretzels there in the gift shop. It's an old fashioned type place and historical, too. While you're there, take a walk through downtown Lititz...a very beautiful and quaint place.
Julius Strugis Pretzel Tour offers a look at how pretzels were handmade in Lancaster County years past. Julius Sturgis' grandson learned the pretzel business from him and his business continues today. You will get to learn how they traditionally made pretzels, and will get to simulate with dough (homemade playdoh type dough). You will get a sample of pretzels after the tour and will get to see the old ovens up close.
Groups larger than 10 people will need to make a reservation, just so they can set up for more people.
$3/adult, $2/child; 3 and under are free.
