The park is also home to the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center, which includes environmental displays about the seashore, educational tours and programming for all ages.
Jones Beach also hosts the popular Bethpage Federal Credit Union Annual Memorial Day Weekend Air Show.
I really used to enjoy this park for some nice relaxation time in the past, the kids used to go rollerblading or bike ride-but lately it's just not doing that for me anymore. The kids like it enough to go once a year, but it's definitely not their favorite park..it would be a nice change if all parks were free admission & kept clean, but what can you do?
Jones Beach is a great place to visit on Long Island. If you are looking for a state park that offers many options of rest and fun, this is the place for you! Naturally, it is a busy state park since it is full of perfect entertainment for the whole family, so prepare yourself with the crowds. However, don't let that stop you as you come to visit!
After paying a fortune to park, we fought the crowd to find a spot for our family. We ended up waaaaay far away from the public bathrooms; a pain when you have kids. It was so overrun with loud, obnoxious teenagers that we couldn't relax. We were afraid to let the kids wander more than a foot away from our blanket. The beach and water are fine, but the atmosphere left a lot to be desired.
Developed by the legendary Robert Moses in 1929, this 2,400-acre barrier beach park stretches for more than 5 miles along the Atlantic. Although it can get very crowded in summer, it’s still a great place to catch the rays.
Facilities include eight swimming areas with several hundred lifeguards, Art Deco bathhouses, Olympic-size and toddler-size swimming pools, ball courts, picnic areas, restaurants and refreshment stands, 2 miles of boardwalk, a chip-and-putt golf course, and top-line concerts in the amphitheater in summer.
Jones Beach State Park is truly a mandatory stop for anyone with kids who is visiting Long Island or who lives on Long Island. The beach is known for its recreational value with miles of sandy beaches, 2 swimming pools, tennis courts, putt putt golf as well as miniature golf, volley ball nets, and other play areas-all scrupulously clean and well maintained. For those who like to take a break from the Sun and surf, the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center offers activities for children that will educate them about marine life and environments on Long Island.
Jones Beach always has a calendar full of events-such as the Mr. and Mrs Jones Beach contest- to activities geared for children. A full events calendar is always posted online.
One of the nicest features about Jones beach is the bike path that begins in field 5 by the Jones Beach Theater, and winds along Wantagh Parkway over bridges, channels and bays for a distance of 5 miles. The path is easy terrain for even the youngest riders (or roller bladers) and ends at Cedar Creek Park in Seaford. Go early to get the most enjoyment out of the ride as it gets very crowded later on in the day. Cedar Beach Park is a lovely little gem of a place so plan to spend a little time exploring it as well.
No review about Jones beach would be complete without mentioning the Nikon Marine Theater located at Field 5. It offers premier entertainment with concerts held on the stage that projects out into Zachs Bay. One of the most impatiently awaited lists on all of Long Island is the summer concert schedule. There is truly nothing that says summer so much as sitting with your family under the star filled night sky, listening to good music and watching the lights of the boats drift in closer to the stage. Pure relaxing family magic for children to remember always.
