Just out of town on a lovely country road, a charming, circa-1860 country store like no other. On the patio out back, dig into chili, grilled cheese and deli sandwiches, and chocolate cake; try the homemade scones and pastries on weekend mornings. You can order picnic lunches ahead, too. Give the kids a few dollars and let them browse the shelves of old-fashioned toys and penny candy, while you look at antiques and collectibles.
