"Had a fun time"
The main reason we went to the fair was so my daughter could see a band that was playing that night. And I thought we should just make a day of it. We bought wristbands, but did not realize they were only good till 5:30pm. Luckily, some of the rides allowed the kids to continue riding because I wasn't buying more armbands. We really enjoyed the butter carving contest and some of the other attractions. And I liked how most of the rides were in one section, so after a while I could sit and let the 4 kids (11 and 14) wander without being too concerned. The thrill rides were in a separate area and weren't as thrilling that day since there were two teens stuck on a ride for a few hours waiting to be rescued. The fair is probably not something we would do again, but it did give us a day of adventure :)

"Very crowded, but great food"
We have been to the Iowa State Fair twice now. Once we left the kids with a sitter, another time we brought them with. It was very hard to navigate around with the stroller and the kids were hot and miserable. They weren't old enough to really take an interest in most of the exhibits and were too small for rides. I'd definitely recommend going with older children who will not wander off and who can get enjoyment from what the fair has to offer.
