"A real battle ship"

My Daughter and Son loved their time here, which was only about two hours but it was a good experience.  We are members of a local Houston museum and have reciprocity at many museums in the country so only being there for a short time didn't hurt our pocket book, but it would anyone who has to pay full price.   NASA is putting a space shuttle there this summer and we will absolutely go back for a second visit.   Being on the pier also lets you see many other boats and compare them to the Intrepid.  Once you are in that part of town though, family eateries are slim pickings, so plan ahead.

"Very different"

This is a very unique experience, but as others have said might be best for older kids who can understand the history--and who don't mind standing on incredibly long lines to get through the metal detectors. I thought the price, even for NYC, was pretty outrageous.

Personally, having gone with my dad as a kid to JFK just to catch a glimpse of the Concorde, I thought being able to go inside one would be awesome, but since everything was glassed in, it really wasn't that interesting.

"Great History"

Better for bigger kids.  The intrepid will give you the feeling of being part of the navy.  There are copters and areas of the air craft carriers where you can explore and sit in the cockpits of the crafts it holds.  Going there will definitely be a time to learn about history and teach you about how people in the navy lives while they're at sea.

"Fun with the Family"

A veteran of World War II, Vietnam, and a prime recovery vessel for NASA, this massive aircraft carrier has been reborn as a terrific museum, housing exhibits of naval, aernautic, and space exploration history. Test your piloting skills inside an F-18 Navy Flight Simulator or talk to retired crew members manning the bridge.

Docked nearby is the USS Growler, a nuclear-guided missile submarine, and the destroyer escort the USS Edson, both open for tours. The Kids’ Corner offers activities related to history and technology, Seaworthy Saturdays feature exploration adventures for all ages, and a summer-long Seafest hosts tugboat races, sea stories, and fire department festivities.
