The IMAX Theater in San Antonio is located in the Riverwalk Mall and includes shows such as the Alamo and the Dinosaurs.
Seeing "The Alamo" movie on the large IMAX screen provided great entertainment and lots of great history. I don't know how I could have forgotten that Davy Crockett fought and died in the battle at the Alamo, so I was glad to have my history refreshed by watching this movie.
Showing kids movies about historical places is an excellent way bring the story to life, but this movie I can't recommend to children under 13. Due to the actual history of what took place at the Alamo, all of the Texians died there at the hands of the Mexican army. At least 10 minutes of intense battle scenes, children being captured by the army, dead bodies on display and being carried away by a wagon to be burned are the images each parent would be wise to decide whether they want their children to see or not.
As an adult I'm glad I saw the 40 minute film because I have a great appreciation and understanding of what took place. It was well done and enjoyable to watch on the IMAX screen.
I received a complimentary movie at the IMAX as part of the "Race to the Alamo", hosted by the San Antonio Convention and Visitors Bureau. http://alamo.visitsanantonio.com/race/ I received no other compensation and all opinions in this review are my own.
Good choice if you enjoy movies or just need to cool off on a hot day. They usually have a show going about the Alamo since it is easy walking distance from the Alamo and the Riverwalk. Obviously, this choice will work for you if your kids enjoy sitting still for a movie. The Imax all around screen is always more entertaining to our family, although I admit on a hot day sometimes it makes for a nice naptime for me!
More Alamo history is available at the IMAX Theater. The IMAX shows a filmed account of the battle, Alamo . . . The Price of Freedom, on its huge, six-story screen. The sound system here is so good the explosions rattle your teeth. The theater also shows other special IMAX films and, in the evening, presents regular movies or classic films on that giant screen. Batman, Jurassic Park, and 2001: A Space Odyssey were real trips here.
The IMAX Theater at San Antonio is a great place to go watch a movie and enjoy the air conditioning! We took my son to see a 3D movie about dinosaurs. It was a little scary for him at parts (he's 3) but he kept his glasses on and enjoyed seeing the animals in 3D. The theater itself was nice and clean, and they provide discounts if you want to watch more than one movie.
