My family, along with another, visited the Curry Village ice rink. I was amazed at how small you can get the ice skates! My daughter is three and wears a toddler size seven shoe and they had that size available for rental! Though the skates are not made for wide feet, so you or your child may have to get a size larger.
Each session is two hours. And now I know why. So many people who do not know how to ice skate butcher the ice, making it more difficult to skate. Yet, it's fun to watch people fall down laughing, horrified that thier friends or family have actually caught them on video! Anyhow, in between sessions they bring out the zamboni to smooth the rink.
Tere are also bright orange construction cones available on the ice, so that learners had something to steady themselves. Those who wish to take extra precautions, may bottow a helmet.
If you decide to do two session, like we did, you can go into the little store between sessions and purchase a s'mores kit (graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows all bundled together) and roasting forks (unless you want to find some sticks) and make your little snack at the fireside located beside the rink.
They also have some indoor tables (this is also where the helmets are kept) should you bring our own meal.
This is my favorite place to go in the winter. The ice rink is located in the valley with an awesome back-drop of half-dome. The kids and I love the outdoor skating and the scenery. When you are in need of a break from the rink, there is always hot cocoa and a raging fire to sit by and enjoy the view!
Imagine ice skating outdoors on a nice ice rink with a 4,000 foot cliff wall rising to your right, and a view of one of the finest domes (Half Dome) in California. It can't get any grander than this.
Yosemite is a wonderful place to visit in the winter and I highly recommend adding ice skating to your list of things you must do!
